An associate in the firm’s Insurance Defense group, Nicole Coleman is a proven investigator, delving into the law and facts of first-party no-fault, third-party automobile negligence, fraud, and other matters she handles.

Nicole earned dual bachelor’s degrees, magna cum laude, in English and Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she was drawn to a career in journalism while serving on the staff of the student newspaper. After graduation, she was a reporter for a group of newspapers in Western New York, and her investigative work often involved interviewing and consulting with lawyers, encounters that prompted her to change course and pursue her legal career.

At Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Nicole supplemented her classroom education as an extern with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and as a volunteer attorney with the Family Law Assistance Project, which gave her the opportunity to represent domestic violence and low-income clients in divorce and custody matters.

After receiving her Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, Nicole joined a large Detroit litigation firm, where she defended health care providers against malpractice claims and gained experience with depositions, discovery, motion practice, and medical record and document review. Looking for greater exposure to the courtroom, she later moved to a smaller firm, which allowed her to add no-fault and property insurance defense, as well as family law, estate planning, and general civil litigation to her repertoire before joining Zausmer, August & Caldwell.

In addition to her active participation in the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, Nicole gives back to the community as a volunteer with the Common Ground Legal Clinic and Lakeshore Legal Aid, and is an avid supporter of animal rescue efforts.
