John Gehring concentrates his practice on eminent domain and employment litigation, using his critical thinking and advocacy skills to achieve positive outcomes for the firm’s clients.

John’s path to the law started in public service. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Biology, magna cum laude, from Carleton College, he joined AmeriCorps and tutored elementary school children in rural Washington. He then earned a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan, after which he coordinated newborn screening programs with the Minnesota Department of Health, and later integrated advances in genomic science within the public health system for the Genomics Unit of the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Seeing the same order and elegance in law as in science, John pursued his Juris Doctor at Michigan State University College of Law, graduating summa cum laude. In law school, he earned various academic honors while also serving as a civil procedure teaching assistant and an associate editor of the Michigan State University Journal of Medicine & Law. He gained additional experience as an extern with the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Benzie County Probate Court, and as a law clerk with the 19th Circuit Court in Beulah and Manistee.

After law school, John joined a litigation firm in Ann Arbor, handling cases involving mortgage fraud, trade secret theft, breach of fiduciary duty, employment issues, and other commercial disputes, including a precedent-setting mortgage fraud recovery action ultimately decided by the Michigan Supreme Court.

John grew up in Northern Michigan and enjoys hiking, biking, and deer hunting. He is also an artisan bread baker, another outlet for his knowledge and love of science.
